Music genres that you hate
|
Prog rock - What the fuck is that shit? Nerdy and pretentious and irritating and yet somehow also the most thoroughly bland music ever created. Pretty much consigned to the dustbin of music history but somehow still popular among the denizens of WHO, judging by the What are you listening to now thread.
Heavy metal - When I was at school only the posh kids liked it. I think they thought it was rebellious. Given the long haired perms, spandex pants and falsetto vocals the only thing remotely rebellious about it is that it's so fucking gay.
Reggae - Pretty much the diametrical opposite of the first two, reggae is nevertheless awful. It's dull, plodding and monotonous. Possibly useful as a soporific when sleeping pills don't do the trick but otherwise worthless.
Yours?

Your got to laugh at Swiss. Sneers at others for liking a genre by inferring that those who like it are children, then admits he’s an old man who likes William Orbit. Never have I seen more cringey Man-Children than when I went to a dance music festival. Place was just full of pallid, sweaty embarrassing uncles.

I am a bit of a metalhead but egregious guitar wankery never did anything for me. It has to be part of the song.

I've tried to get into classical, but just can't. I also can't fathom how the Rolling Stones got so big.

Swiss,
When you say Heavy Metal, what do you mean?
Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest etc, or are you including Aerosmith, ZZ Top, AC/DC etc?

Nagel I couldn't disagree more. Bland is the absolute last thing that progressive rock can be called. We are living through an absolute golden age of great progressive rock albums and have been for nearly 30 years. Are you possibly confusing prog with AOR,?, which can be quite bland in my opinion.

I agree with Stoat about Hip Hop. Hip Hop/Garage is just childish non music. I can't understand how anyone over about 15 could get pleasure from it.
There are genres that aren't my cup of tea, but I can respect, eg Motown, reggae, funk, soul. country.
There is a kind of sub indie rock genre I dislike. What I would call music for people who read Q and/or NME. bands suchvas Coldplay, Oasis,
I wouldn't say I hate Northern Soul, but it certainly isn't for me. I do find it very bland. Maybe Northern Sold could recommend one or two tracks I could give a listen to, which may change my mind?
Most punk is awful. I got dragged along to a UK Subs gig a few years ago and it was just raucous noise. Again I found d it odd how adults could enjoy it. One punk band I liked was Crass as they created a niche if their own. If there ever was such a thing as prog-punk it was Crass.
I've seen a couple of people call progressive rock boring. I can maybe understand why they say that. But I disagree that the genre as a whole is boring. I tend to like music that makes an effort to push the envelope, and a lot of contemporary progressive rock does just that. I also like the intensity that a lot of progressive rock has. The author of this thread called progressive rock pretentious. Maybe (s)he could explain why (s)he holds that view, as I would challenge it. There is nothing pretentious about seeking to create music of quality and innovation. In the current contemporary progressive rock scene there is a real sense of people endeavouring to push the envelope and that is great .
